My Neurodivergent Ninja

Musings and adventures of an ok-ish mother

Wait… what?

You know what I’ll never get used to? Having to be prepared for any event or conversation to go somewhere I truly never thought it could go. Like yesterday. As part of our daily conversation about why brushing ones teeth is necessary, I reminded Ninja that his recently grown in top and bottom front teeth are permanent teeth. You know, the ones he will hopefully have for the rest of his life. As I had told him countless times before, I repeated that we needed to take care of them so they stay healthy.

For some reason that comment yesterday triggered something inside his brain, and he said “take care of – like the way I’d have to take care of a baby or a parasitic twin?”. I’ll be honest, that’s not where MY head went, but here we were. I could see the wheels spinning in his head, about what life with a parasitic twin must be like. He wondered what if one twin was allergic to bananas and the other twin ate one, would the allergic twin get sick? And if one twin died, how long would the other twin live? What if they didn’t like each other clothes? He then declared he had a parasitic twin, and set about taping a small PVC pipe to his chest, with a smiley face drawn on.

He was honestly upset that I made him “take his twin off” before the school bus came, and threw a minor tantrum. This was pretty high up on my what-the-fuck scale, so I was relieved to have had my coffee beforehand. Sometimes I think of what other kids argue with their parents about – screen time? Eating vegetables?… and wonder what that would be like.

After school the Ninja decided he was going to have a concert in the living room/baseball stadium. He changed into a blazer, put a towel around his neck, turned on his colored globe light, and attempted to lip sync Sweet Victory by Europe while standing on the couch. That led to a rabbit hole of music on YouTube, with everything from Frank Sinatra to a myriad of 80’s ballads and classic country. He loves the sound of the 80’s rock songs and says they make him want to cry happy tears, which in turn makes ME want to cry happy tears. Because is there anything better than a kid with a non-ironic mullet rocking out to the music of the Big Haired days? I’m thankful he forgave my treatment of his parasitic twin that morning, because seeing his sweet old soul really feeling the music was such a joy.

Fast forward to this morning, which was picture day at school. He insisted on dressing “fancy” in his blazer and khakis, because he wanted people to know he is a lawyer. This was a first, as far as being that particular occupation, but with his brain wiring and relentless argumentative skill set I think he’d be a fantastic one. I was also treated to my first self graded paper of the year, which happened a few times the previous school year. I have no idea if his teacher ever actually sees these assignments once completed, and but damn if they don’t crack me up every single time. And I believe that he believes he is shining in school. And honestly, that’s all that matters.
